Air Fryer Carrots With Miso Soy Glaze

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

These glazed air fryer carrots are the perfect side dish.  They're delicious, quick and easy to make, and cook in only 12 minutes. The soy glaze gives this dish a tasty umami flavor.

Carrots are such a versatile veggie. They're delicious when prepared in a savory side dish, eaten raw, or in a sweet dessert. (I had carrot cake for my wedding cake!) This simple side dish is both sweet and savory and super easy when made in the air fryer.

Air frying is one of my favorite cooking methods.  You can roast veggies so much quicker than in the oven with little to no oil. When you roast vegetables, they release their natural sugar making them even more flavorful like in my air fryer acorn squash.

Why You'll Love These Air Fryer Carrots

    • Kid-friendly: The whole family will love these carrots with the sweet soy glaze.
    • Quick and easy: Using an air fryer is the best way to roast carrots.  It takes much less time than in the oven with minimal effort.
    • Perfect side dish: These carrots can be paired with almost any main dish! They're simple enough for a regular weeknight dinner or can be for a holiday meal.

    Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed to make air fryer carrots.
    • Soy sauce - I always use less sodium soy sauce.  If you are using regular, you may want to cut back on the soy sauce in the glaze.
    • Miso paste - You can find miso paste in most regular grocery stores or in any Asian market.

Please see the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and amounts needed.

    Variations

    • Leave off the glaze for simple roasted carrots.
    • For a sweeter glaze, add a tablespoon of brown sugar or more maple syrup.
    • To make them sweet AND spicy, add some red pepper flakes.
    • Add ½ teaspoon of sesame oil to the glaze and then sprinkle some sesame seeds on the roasted carrots.

How To Make Air Fryer Carrots

Carrot sticks on a blue cutting board.,

Step 1: First, wash, peel and cut your carrots. I like mine cut into sticks so they look like carrot fries.

A white bowl with carrot sticks, oil and seasonings.

Step 2: Place the carrot pieces in a bowl with the olive oil and a sprinkling of salt and black pepper. Stir to coat.

Carrot sticks in the basket of the air fryer.

Step 3: Place the sliced carrots in the air fryer basket. Try to fit them in a single layer.

Roasted carrot sticks with oil and seasonings.

Step 4: Bake at 375° for 6 minutes. Shake the basket around or flip the carrots and bake for another 6 minutes.  You want the carrots to be tender golden brown.

Soy sauce being poured into a small bowl.

Step 5: Meanwhile, prepare the soy glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, soy sauce, rice vinegar, miso paste, and ground ginger.  Set aside.

Air fried carrot sticks with fresh parsley.

Step 6: Place the roasted carrots on a plate. Add a few tablespoons of the glaze on the carrots and stir them to coat. You will not need to use all of the glaze. Serve and enjoy!

    Expert Tips

    • It's important to try to get the carrot pieces close to the same size.  This way they will cook evenly without any burnt ends or hard carrot pieces.
    • You don't need to use too much salt and pepper as the glaze will give the carrots lots of flavor.
    • The soy glaze isn't super sweet as the miso paste adds a salty umami flavor.  You can leave out the miso or add more maple syrup if you want the glaze to be sweeter.
    • Save the leftover glaze to use on other veggies like broccoli, green beans or Brussels sprouts.  It's also delicious on crispy tofu.
    • I recommend using parchment paper that's made for the air fryer for easy cleanup. It has holes in it so the air can move through it.

    Storage and Recipe FAQs

Can I make this recipe in the oven if I don't have an air fryer?

Yes, you can! Just follow the same steps, but roast the carrots on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 400°F until they're tender and slightly crispy.  This typically takes about 25 minutes.

Can I use different types of carrots for this recipe?

Absolutely! You can use regular carrots, baby carrots, or colorful heirloom varieties. The cooking time should be about the same but test for tenderness by piercing the carrots with a fork.

Is the soy glaze sweet or savory?

Both!  The soy glaze has a wonderful balance of both sweet and savory flavors. It's made with soy sauce, a touch of sweetness, and other ingredients to create a delicious coating for the carrots.

Can I make this recipe without soy?

Sure. You can substitute tamari for the soy sauce or use a soy-free alternative like coconut aminos to accommodate soy allergies.

How can I store leftover carrots?

Store the glazed air fryer carrots in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can either reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or in the oven/air fryer for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees.
